Artist Overview

Theresa is a Mexican American artist and native Austinite whose creative practice began during the COVID-19 lockdowns—somewhere between global uncertainty and a block of linoleum. A graduate of the University of Texas at Austin, she began making art in 2020 as a way to process personal and societal upheaval.

Her work is deeply rooted in her heritage and shaped by lived experiences navigating the U.S. healthcare system. When she’s not carving linocuts, painting, or repurposing found media, she works in the sciences—proving that a background in data doesn’t preclude a life in color.

Artistic Philosophy

Creative Vision

Theresa’s creative process begins with watercolor sketches—small studies that lay the emotional and visual groundwork for her larger mixed media pieces. Her work is often inspired by found media, forgotten or abandoned objects, and the societal impact they carry, both as artifacts and symbols.

Her linocuts and paintings are deeply tied to the Texas landscape and the lived issues that shape it, from healthcare inequality to housing insecurity. A sense of place—both personal and political—runs through her work, layered with color, texture, and memory.

Her printmaking practice focuses on limited-run editions, utilizing chine-collé, reduction blocks, and multi-block techniques to create richly layered prints. Whether carved or painted, her work invites viewers to slow down, look closer, and consider what’s been overlooked.
